Liquid Spills: What To Do?

Some liquid has just spilled into your computer. What should you do?

Bring your computer in for a spill cleaning. We'll completely disassemble your unit, and clean the affected parts. Then we reassemble the computer and test it to determine if any of the parts need to be replaced. A technician will then call you with the cost to replace any damaged parts; at that point you can choose to continue the repair or opt to perform a data backup of your files. You'll get the same advice we'd give a good friend; if it makes more sense to purchase a new computer, we'll let you know.

Do

  1. Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Remove the computer's battery if it's a portable device (laptop, Tablet PC).
  3. Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
  4. Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
  5. Note what was spilled on your Computer.
  6. Bring the computer to CPR as soon as possible.

    Don't

    1. Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your computer in destructive ways.
    2. Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
    3. Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

It's funny, recently we've been getting more and more of these issues. In matter effect, just in the last couple of weeks, 4 computers came in to be serviced with the problem. That's when we decided to create a "Service Special", and post a new article on the blog.

How often do you see these problems?
